I was raised in Armenia, the first country to accept Christianity as a state religion. My schooling included study and exploration of the Armenian Illuminated Manuscripts. I visited the Matenadaran, museum and library of approximately 11,000 surviving Armenian illuminated manuscripts, on a regular basis to investigate the details and composition of these holy pictures. Additionally, I am an admirer of Renaissance masters and have always been interested in their technique. I strive to achieve their perfection in style, color and composition at the same time keeping true to the Armenian manuscripts that I studied.
These scriptural themes have a direct connection with my life experiences. Knowing the stories from the Old and the New Testaments I pick the themes according to my life circumstances.
My works are mainly acrylic on parchment (animal skin) however, I also enjoy working with graphite on parchment or oil on canvas for larger pieces.
These works are spiritually enriching for me. I hope the viewer will feel all that I have felt in re-examining these themes and shedding new light on them. Each dynamic scene portrays a frozen moment in time and allows you, the viewer, to continue the story in your minds.
